During the Ward 4 debate in Hagersville on Oct 20/10 it was Doug’s turn to answer a question about the silly anti-pet by-law recently passed by council that makes it illegal to buy a budgie or a goldfish, but OK to have a bison or pot-bellied pig.
Doug’s wry sense of humour had them laughing in the aisles:
“You’ve never had to get a permit for your budgie cage, but you’re going to have to get one for your bison stable. Now, of course, in Haldimand County you might be able to avoid a permit if you get it converted to a smokeshack.”
This foolish anti-pet by-law is indicative of what is truly wrong with Haldimand Council today. Clearly, councillors are not thinking through the issues and using their own common sense when casting votes on issues.
All three ‘Open for Business’ candidates – Doug Fleming, Merlyn Kinrade and Gary McHale – have the endorsement of Murray Killman of the Killman Zoo, as advertised here, and in their Oct 20th full-page ad in the Regional News for their promise to repeal this by-law.

Let’s make Haldimand ‘Open for Business’ again – vote for Doug Fleming in Ward 3.
